Tuesday Manga Recs: Kainushi Juujin to Pet Joshikosei

I totally forgot about doing recs last Tuesday because I was busy with other things even though I wanted to commit to it…! I guess I can make it more to a monthly/bi-weekly thing.

Anyway, following up with last week’s review/rec of Yuukoku no Moriarty, this time I’ll review something of a different genre; the furry yet heartwarming comedy, Kajipeji!

Kajipeji, short for ‘Kainushi Juujin to Pet Kanojo’ (The Beast Owner and his Pet High School Girl) is a comedy manga currently ongoing on Pixiv Comics. It’s technically legal to read online, and I’m sure scanlations up to chapter 12 perhaps are available anywhere if you can’t read Japanese.

As the title might suggest, it is very furry with furry characters. Yet, I think the story is heartwarming enough for anyone to enjoy!

It tells the story of Kashiwagi Aki, a high school girl who got stranded to an alternate universe where beasts reign and humans are treated as either livestock or exotic pet. She was unable to speak beast men language, and couldn’t even remember how she got to this world. Luckily for that poor Aki, a very sweet dog man named Zinovy adopted her as a pet and renamed her ‘Lila’.

Zinovy who was known to be very fickle and usually wasn’t attached to anything ends up being way too attached and protective to his pet Lila, and it even surprised his friends and family. Though unfortunately for Zinovy, Lila is scared by dogs and is more to a cat person— and often just dismiss his affection while adoring more of the cat-type beast men.

Despite the premise that might turn off people especially if they don’t really like furries, Kajipeji is actually a very heartwarming simple comedy manga that done well in switching between its serious and comedic sides. It was hinted that even Lila/Aki doesn’t really have a comfortable domestic life in her original world and was lonely, so I don’t think it’s even a case of Stockholm Syndrome people are saying this series was.

There is much darker, dramatic backstory hidden behind its comedic front such as Zinovy’s kouhai, Rolf’s backstory, but it balanced well with the heartwarming, lighter side of it and made it really enjoyable. The characters all have their own charm to their own, and their interaction with each other is proven adorable.

My favorite panel of this manga ever.

This review might be shorter than my previous because there aren’t as much I could talk about it with its shorter length and simpler storyline. Yet, I find this story enjoyable to relax and read and would really recommend it to people who are looking for a simple, comedic heartwarming story.
